Description
Son of Shri. Unneen and Smt. Kadiyumma; born at Nilambur in Malappuram District of Kerala State on 15th May 1935; Agriculturist, Political Worker and Trade Unionist.
Entered politics as a Member of the Indian National Congress in 1952; Actively participated in Congress political activities during student days. Entered in active politics as a Congress Member in 1952 and became the President of the Mandalam Congress Committee subsequently. Was elected as Member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee in 1958. Became the Secretary of the District Congress Committee Kozhikode in 1958. When the new district, viz-a-viz Malapppuram was formed in 1959, was elected as the President of the District Congress Committee in the same year and continued in the post for 11 years. Nominated as General Secretary of the KPCC and continued for 12 years. Was President of various Trade Unions affiliated to INTUC. Was a pioneer in the Co-operative movement in the State and was President of the apex bodies like Kerala State Co-operative Marketing Federation and Member of the Board of Directors of various apex organizations. Had been the Director of N.C.D.C. and NAFED.
Elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1977 from the home constituency of Nilambur in Malappuram District. Became Minister holding the portfolios of Labour and Forest for two and a half years from 1980 to 1982. Again elected in 1987 and became Minister for Labour and Tourism in the A.K. Antony Ministry during the IX KLA and Minister for Power in the Oommen Chandy Ministry (2004-2006); in the XIII KLA became Minister for Power and Transport in the Oommen Chandy Ministry. He became Minister for the fourth time.
Was elected as Secretary of the Congress Legislative Party during X Kerala Legislative Assembly; Held the post of Congress Party Whip in 1987; was Chairman, Committee on Public Accounts (1998-2001) and (2006-2011), and Committee on Public Undertakings (2001-2004) of Kerala Legislative Assembly.
Elected to KLA in 1977, 1980, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011 from the home constituency of Nilambur.
