We spent several hours going from restaurant to restaurant trying local food and drinks. A Neo-Gothic Halem market commod walked past vendors selling prickly Sakotis cakes and bucket-by-bucket fermented garlic landscapes to Root, a bright, modern cheeseshop run by Redita Vadeike and her mother Lolita Strumyliene. Lolita told me that when Lithuania joined the European Union in 2004, local cheese producers brought with them new techniques of staying in France and Italy.

Meat, herring and potatoes seemed to be my favorite ingredients, but their restaurants also offer various regional specialties. Not only do they lie in the middle of the tourist centre of Vilnius, but I avoided them because I thought they would offer overpriced food for tourists. I liked their traditional decor, and although they are at home in the city, they also have other places in Lithuania that are worth a visit.

The main shop, fine bar and restaurant are all within walking distance of the Congress Avenue Hotel. The new hotel has Pacai Noma alum Matas Paulinas at the helm, with an ambitious 27 seats in the 19th century.
