Description
In Summer 2015, Cotopaxi volcano started to smoke and expelled out big amounts of ashes, steam and some fireworks. The National Park was closed and climbing to the summit was absolutely forbidden. After a series of analysis of the National Geophysical Institute in concordance with local authorities, among them, the ASEGUIM Mountain Guides who scouted the route, The access to the summit is allowed since October 04th 2017.
Due to its natural beauty and easy access, Cotopaxi became a South American classic climb, lodging hundred of visitors and climbers every month , most of them spending night at José Rivas hut (4800 mt) and another portion in Tambopaxi Lodge (3,700 mt) at the bottom of Limpiopungo valley . Assuming that you are already acclimatized we would recommend to use the Lodge, where you will have a better rest, comfort and many facilities.
Day 1 – Cotopaxi National Park
Depart from Quito in South direction towards Cotopaxi National Park. Posibility to see an Indian Market on our way. Accommodation at Tambopaxi Lodge (3700 mt) or if you prefer at José Rivas refuge (4800 mt) – short acclimatization hike or glacier training (depending what you chose). Early dinner and go rest.
Day 2 – Summit
Assuming you decided to stay overnight in the Lodge, we will drive before midnight up to the parking lot 4600mt. and approach to the José Rivas refuge (30 minutes), where we will join the normal route towards to the top,and in about 6 or 7 hours we will reach the summit. I But if you want to stay overnight at José Rivas hut, let us know, so that, we will do all arrangements.
