Respite Care Support: A Solution for Improvement and Well-being of Caregivers and Participants.
Short Term Accommodation (STA Providers in Victoria), including respite, provides funding for the NDIS participants to temporarily stay at a respite lodging where they can socialise with people and develop their skills. This NDIS-funded support promotes the mental and physical well-being of the participants as well as their carers. While the participants get the chance to network and engage in capacity-building activities, their carers can avoid being overly worn out and take a break from their duties. This NDIS support promotes rest and relaxation which is important in maintaining the productivity of the carers and developing greater independence in participants.
Short Term Accommodation allows the participants to explore new skills and enjoy a brief stay in a new environment without compromising on the required assistance. The flexibility of the STA support funding permits the participants to avail of respite care support in blocks of 14 days at a time or for one weekend per month. It covers the cost of the participant’s daily care activities, accommodation, food and disability assistance for participating in capacity-building activities. If the participant does not require individual help due to their disability, they will have to share the support with other participants since STA funding is available for a group price. Short Term Accommodation, including respite, is not to be used in times of housing emergencies where a participant needs a place to stay; rather, to maintain the supports of a participant while their informal support network may need a break. STA support and services are included in a participant’s NDIS plan only if it meets the NDIS funding criteria.
